Title Sequence
Coimbra, 2022
This project was created in collaboration with Marta Babau and Silas Sequeira, as part of the Typography in Digital Media subject, during our second year in the Bachelor's Degree program in Design and Multimedia at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, under the guidance of professors Paul Hardman and Bruna Sousa.
After the disappearance of Gus Thenberg, the FBI begins an investigation to try to discover his whereabouts, until they receive a letter written with magazine and newspaper cutouts that transforms the investigation of the disappearance into a homicide investigation. Soon the police realize that this is not about a murderer anymore, rather a stalker and serial killer, with a strange fixation on typography.
The task given to the students was to develop a 30 second long title sequence for an imaginary film named "Typography in Digital Media". In addition to creating the video, the students had to conceptualize the genre of the imaginary film and write a synopsis for it.
Inspired mostly by the title sequences of "Se7en", "American Horror Story" and "Enter the Void", we aimed to create a frantic, fast-paced, discomforting and myserious video. Considering our subject was about typography in digital media, we figured the most interesting and unorthodox approach would be to approach it "analogically".
By using the digitization process, we developed a series of images using newspaper and magazine cutouts, as well as random objects, vitrail paint and even our bodies. When we finally started the editing process, we blended these images and sound while adding some special effects and abrupt movements in order to achieve a very distorted and rythmic final result.
